HYPNOTHERAPY FOR ANGER MANAGEMENT

“Everytime you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.”
Deepak Chopra

We all get angry sometimes. It is normally a fleeting feeling which passes quickly and happens just occasionally. When displays of anger become frequent, unpredictable, scary and the people we care about feel they have to ‘walk on eggshells’ around us, it may be time to consider whether we would benefit from professional help.

Do I have a problem with anger?
When you are in the thick of it, your anger might feel completely justified and reasonable to you. It might be the other people in your life who are telling you that it is causing a problem but you struggle to see it. It may help to take a look from a different perspective to understand whether your reaction and responses are having a damaging effect on your life.

  • Do you feel ‘out of control’ when you are angry?
  • Do you find yourself losing your temper too quickly and wish you could stay calm?
  • Do you find you say or do things when you are angry, which are out of character and which you later regret?
  • Have family or friends commented that they feel scared when you get angry, or find themselves constantly ‘walking on eggshells’?
  • Do you want to stay in control of your emotions and find healthier ways to communicate your feelings?

If your answer is “yes” to any of these questions, hypnotherapy may be just the answer you are looking for.

Why do I get so angry?
The physical sensation and emotions of anger have their roots in our ancient survival mechanisms. Most animals, when they perceive that they are under attack, have an instinctive and unconscious reaction, that makes them bigger, fiercer and more scary. It is a very successful self protection strategy. This is exactly how humans work too. We all have a very primitive part of our brain which is specifically designed to take over and protect us when it believes our lives are under threat.

The reason why anger reactions become a problem for some people, lies in the type of threat we are now faced with as a species. We now live in a very different society to the one which our brains evolved to cope with. Rather than protecting our families from large, hungry predators, we get cut up by bad drivers when we have our children in the car. Rather than the threat of another tribe stealing the food we’ve stored for winter, we have the threat of getting made redundant and endless bills arriving. Although these threats are in fact real, when stress has built up in other areas of our lives, this primitive part of our brain can become a little too quick to take over, and can become reluctant to switch off.

Can Hypnotherapy help me control my anger?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective way to reprogram your brain so you can stay calm and communicate your feelings effectively. This change in how you react is actually surprisingly easy to achieve. Traditional anger management techniques rely largely on will power to keep you calm, which in turn relies on having the presence of mind to stay focused. Not so easy in the heat of the moment! In contrast, hypnotherapy can get right to the root of the problem, so that staying calm and collected, in every situation, becomes the most natural thing in the world for you.

Using a combination of Solution Focused Therapy and calming hypnosis, we will work together to reduce the stress in your life and create new and positive pathways in your mind. This will not only reduce the influence of the primitive part of your brain, but also create lasting and effortless changes in how you think and feel. As your perception of all the stresses in your life begins to change for the better, so will your anger reactions.

How I can help you manage your anger through hypnotherapy.
The very first thing we need to do is meet and have a chat about you. Often stress builds up so slowly it becomes completely normal and we don’t recognise it. So we need to have a good look at everything that is going on in your life which might be affecting you without your awareness. I will also explain in more detail just how the primitive, survival part of your brain is hijacking your reactions, and what you can do about it.

In the following sessions, we will work together to shift how your mind is perceiving the events in your life, so that they become more manageable for you. During hypnosis your body and mind will both remember how to relax deeply and come off the ‘red alert’ setting they’ve been on for so long. You will stay in complete control throughout the hypnosis, and together we will create new ways of thinking at a deep and permanent level.
